It’s always good to see people whose opinions I respect saying things I have been saying. Now if only we could get our leadership to recognize that if everyone is saying it, they should listen.

Today, Salon’s Glenn Greenwald notes this:

A Democratic Party that seems more interested in attracting the support of Republicans won’t inspire turnout.

As I noted yesterday.

For months I have been saying that we allow over-influence of so-called bi-partisanship on the Democratic Party. If we continue to act as if what Republicans do/think/might think/might do is more important than are the constituencies who voted the Democrats in to begin with, we will continue to lose ground. As happened Tuesday night.

The Democratic leadership is over-fond of saying that things will happen in some middle-distance where majorities and ideas coalesce. But where’s the integrity? The integrity comes with voting conscience and constituency. The Republicans vote with their base all the time. Here;s a clue: So can the Democrats. But if the Democrats continue to waffle on this, we will continue to see losses like the massive ones Tuesday night. (And if the Democratic leadership does not see that the Maine vote was a devastating loss to progressives, that’s one more problem we have to overcome.)

It’s time to cease the instant correlation between “Democrat” and “spineless.” If we don’t, we will lose far more than six judicial spots in Pennsylvania, two governorships and a same-sex marriage law. We will lose Congress and the White House. —VAB
