hey mr. president: still waiting

Oct 24th, 2009

i know i am not the only one still waiting for president obama to make good on his big speech to HRC.

one thing he could have done is to sign the hate crimes legislation instantaneously.

one thing.

another thing he could have done is issue a stop-loss order allowing all gays and lesbians in the military to be there regardless of being out or not. that would have forced some hands in congress on DADT. hundreds of queers have been discharged from the military under DADT on obama’s watch. obama pledged to end DADT when he asked for queer votes, remember?

it is just under a year since we elected him but obama’s done nothing for us except give a speech and a cocktail party for the ass-kissing HRC elite.

yesterday wanda sykes, the first black woman and out queer comedian to host the correspondent’s dinner, was on oprah. she said that “being gay is harder than being black.” she explained how she doesn’t have to tell anyone that she’s black, doesn’t have to come out about being black to family, friends and co-workers. and she noted (she and her wife were married in california a year ag0, before prop 8 rescinded legal same-sex marriage there and her wife recently gave birth to twins) that people keep saying that everything is the same for queers and straights, but it isn’t. sykes gave marriage as just one example, noting “they says it’s just semantics, but it isn’t, it’s rights.”

exactly.

so: how much longer for our civil rights, mr. president?—vab
